Sustainable Fish and Fishing

Sustainable fishing is about making sure that the levels of fish in the sea are managed so that overfishing does not wipe out fish stocks. The overall aim of sustainable fishing is to preserve fish and other seafood products for future generations to enjoy.

Over the last twenty years demand for seafood has increased at an incredible rate, driving fishing to an unsustainable level. Many of the most popular and well known fish types have been subject to intensive practices. This unsustainable fishing has led to fish stocks being greatly reduced. For example stocks of salmon in the Atlantic have more than halved. Currently, four out of the six species of tuna are overfished, which could lead to the disappearance of scarcer species, such as Bluefin. This is something which sustainable fishing aims to prevent.
